Access to work scheme - disabled workers

Source: Department for Work & Pensions | | 14/08/2019

A record number of disabled workers were supported by the Access to Work scheme in 2018. The government’s new figures reveal that 36,240 people received an Access to Work grant in 2018, with government spending totalling £129.1 million.

Access to Work is a government-run scheme that breaks down workplace barriers for workers who are disabled, or have health conditions, by paying for adjustments such as specialist equipment or software, support workers, travel to work and sign language interpreters. Workers can each receive up to £59,200 annually through the scheme and applications can be made online or by phone by calling the Access to Work helpline on 0800 121 7479. The application must be made by the worker, not their employer. As well as providing grants to workers, the scheme can also provide grants to apprentices, interns, those undertaking work experience and the self-employed.
