Dave Brown (Consultant) CTA, AIIT - VAT Consultant
Dave Brown
Dave Brown is one of the UK’s most experienced VAT consultants, having dealt with VAT on a day-to-day basis for 38 years. After 13 years working as a VAT officer, he left in 1987 to embark on a successful career in the accountancy profession, specialising in VAT. Four years ago, Dave went self-employed and despite the harsh economic climate, he has managed to set up a thriving VAT advisory business, covering every aspect of VAT – from registering for VAT, to advising on complex property transactions.

Another specialism relates to the often-complex rules relating to listed buildings, and in this respect, he is the national VAT advisor to the Listed Property Owners Club, a support organisation based in Kent. Although Dave is based in Devon, his client base is already nationwide, and he is therefore well placed to answer any questions you might have on this topic.

Pieter Burger (Consultant) Chartered MCIS, DipPFS – Investment Advisor & Stockbroker
Pieter Burger
Pieter entered the financial services world on the 13th May 1998 by being late for his job interview with Pearl Assurance due to the birth of his first daughter during the night. He met his wife Tanya in Minehead in 1996 and their second daughter was born in 2000. During the 2 years at Pearl, Pieter started studying for his financial qualifications, passing all 3 FPC exams whilst building his first house in Exeter.

At the end of 1999, Pieter was offered a job with Lloyds TSB as a financial consultant. He stayed there for 5 years working in Tiverton, Honiton, Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary. During this time, Pieter continued to study and improve his financial knowledge after one of his mentors told him ‘always stay at school.’ Continued changes and a reduction in the investments available to the clients caused Pieter to seek new pastures where he would be able to offer independent advice.

In October 2005, he was approached by Edward Jones Investments to open an office in Honiton. The Edward Jones experience gave not only an opportunity to provide independent financial advice, but also allowed Pieter to study to become a stockbroker. Most importantly, each office was considered the adviser’s own business without management or targets.

Late 2009 saw Edward Jones leave the UK and the entire business was sold to Towry. The direction that Towry was going to take the company did not fit in Pieter’s investment or client relationship beliefs and resulted in Pieter deciding to set up his own practice using the Raymond James Investment Services platform.

Pieter’s expertise leans heavily towards the investment side. He works with individuals and small businesses that would like investment advice and prefer a level of interaction. He is qualified to level 6 through the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and has recently been awarded Chartered Member Status [Chartered MCSI].

Additionally, he has also been studying through the Chartered Insurance Institute. Although he currently holds the DipPFS designation, Pieter has amassed 255 of the 290 points towards becoming an Advanced Financial Planner.
